Helpline from June 15 to stop ragging

Though they are strict anti-ragging rules, still cases are reported where junior student are becoming prey of brutal ragging by their seniors. The recent cases reported death of a medical student in Himachal Pradesh where he was beaten in the name of ragging and in another case a student was almost blinded.

After the death of Aman Kachroo a medical student his father had proposed a helpline to check ragging. By June15, 2009 a toll free 24X7 helpline will be placed which is announced by the University Grants Commission which will follow rules. The rule to be termed as the UGC Regulations on Curbing the Menace of Ragging in Higher Educational Institutions, 2009. The rules are applied to all universities under the Central or State Act and all deemed universities.

Within 15 minutes of a complaint on ragging in an institution, the head of the institution will be reported and will be asked for an action taken report (ATR). It is also seen that the HRD Ministry, UGC and the parents of the complainant are not informed about this as they may come in the way for taking any action. Hope this helpline may curb the brutal ragging cases to some extent. What do you say about it friends. Feel free to leave your views and that's all for now, signing off with love..

Thank you for shareing this useful information. Ragging is a sick mentality that we imported from the western world. UGC has taken the right step. It is high time that the victims use this facility and help in crubing this sick practice.

This is a welcome step ... the technology flow and the process seems complete. How much will be followed in practice needs to be seen ... after all, we are moving in an era of muscled life more than real life.

@all: well friends I would say something is better than nothing. I happy that some law or helping agency is there to listen to students. In this way atleast killing of students can come down. Let us hope for the best.. :)

Thank you for your valuable comments...

its good that this helpline thing is getting started but then at the end of the day nothing can stop ragging unless the people who indulge in it themselves decide not 2 ..

Guess, Little ragging is necessary in evry1 life..I studied in a govt college(staying in hostel).
Today 2 years after passing out, i can say that i am closest to the seniors who ragged me and to the juniors whom i ragged!!
It surely made me smarter than before
(things like singing in female voice in class..he he)
